The Love & Lies Of Rukhsana Ali

Rukhsana has gone almost seventeen years trying to get around her strict muslim mother’s values, while keeping time for her girlfriend, Ariana, and her best friends, Jen and Rachel. As the oldest daughter, she has been expected to clean, cook, and study her whole life so she gets a wealthy husband, but that’s never been what Rukhsana wants. When she receives a full scholarship to Caltech, a state away, her plan is to run off with her girlfriend and pursue her dreams in california. But things dont always go according to plan, and when Rukhsana’s mom catches her with her girlfriend, her luck couldn’t get any worse. It was bad enough that her friends couldn’t understand her culture. But now her family doesn’t want anything to do with her, she’s all alone.

I loved this story, hands down the best LGBTQ story I’ve read in the past few months, however I do have a few critiques. In the end of the book, after Ruhksana has several trust breaking fallouts with her mother, she forgave her very quickly, which felt strange to me. Overall I really enjoyed this book, it was a true page turner and informative on the cultural differences not a lot of people realize.
