Far From The Tree

16 year old Grace has just put her baby up for adoption. Even though her baby, whom she refers to as Peach, is adopted into a nice home, Grace is going through a very emotional time. Grace herself was adopted, and now she’s curious about her birth mother. When Grace starts asking questions about her birth mom, her parents explain to her that she has two other siblings, Maya and Joaquin. Maya, who’s a year younger than Grace, was adopted by a wealthy family who promptly had another child, Lauren. Maya’s complicated family problems lie under the surface. Joaquin, who’s 18, spent most of his life in foster care. But now his current foster parents are wanting to adopt him, but he’s unsure because of his past which also lies under the surface. Grace, Maya, and Joaquin’s journeys bringing them all together and the true meaning of chosen family really entranced me. The light that was shone on each sibling’s mental health issues, and the topic of inheriting mental health issues was discussed in a very relatable way. The adoption and foster care system discussions were very important because they showcased all sides of adoption. Grace’s emotional turmoil after giving up her baby, Joaquin's experience of the negative and abusive side of the foster system, and Maya’s experience that not all adoptions are into a happy family. This was a great read that really grabbed me from the beginning, I loved it :)
