The Hazel Wood

Seventeen-year-old Alice Poserpine and her mother, Ella, have spent their whole lives running from bad luck. Ever since Alice could remember, they’ve moved around, place to place, always leaving when they’ve overstayed their welcome or when the bad luck comes back around. Alice has had anger issues, and Ella has struggled, but they’ve always gotten by. Until they finally stood still.

Ella’s new marriage is going south, and Alice is stuck in New York City, with Ella and her newfound dysfunctional step family with nothing to do. Except until she meets Finch, a boy with an obsession over Alice’s possible fairytale past. You see, her grandmother owns a mysterious estate from her shortlived fame of selling a book of twisted fairytales, of which there were only a few copies left. But Finch thinks somehow the fairytales could be the reasoning to all her bad luck. And when the bad luck starts turning into a nightmare, Alice realizies he might just be right.

Now, I really do love this book, the set up was perfect and the stories were as twisted as they promised to be, however, towards the end, I felt like I was hitting a dead end, now this could have been personal, but I felt as if the story stopped captivating me. The imagery and writing style were great for a book like this, and I really appreciated the bittersweet ending.
