Monday's Not Coming

Monday Charles is missing.

Claudia is Monday’s best friend, her other half.

Claudia is having a crisis because no matter how hard she tries, Monday’s. Not. Coming.

This story is gut wrenching, heart breaking, and surprising. Dealing with topics of abuse, mental illness and trauma, this story takes place in Washington D.C. where Claudia and Monday grew up, making up dances and doing each other’s hair, until one summer, Monday disappears, and when Claudia comes back from vacation, discovering she’s gone, she starts a hunt within her community and her family. Monday has always had a different home life, but Claudia didn’t care, they were friends, that’s all that mattered. But now, Claudia is wishing she’d paid more attention to how much Monday was out of school or slept over so often. This story tells a tail of trauma, and remembering, in the most literal way possible. I enjoyed how the story was set up, where the reader and the protagonist were just as confused at what’s happening in the story, where you and Claudia were trying to put the clues together. The answer had lied right before our eyes, we just couldn't see it, which relevant to to current stories we hear about child abuse, and especially when it happens to black and brown kids. It's been over a day since I finished reading this, and the story is still heavy on my mind. I recommend it to those who like suspense and true crime or insightful stories.
