Concrete Rose

This story follows Mav Carter, and if that name sounds familiar to you, that’s because he’s Starr Carter’s dad in The Hate U Give, and this story follows his life before Starr, when he had his oldest son, Seven. Mav knows that if there’s one thing a good man does, it’s take care of his family. What he didn’t know is how quickly he’d be experiencing that.

Before, everything was alright, he had a girlfriend and a cousin who was practically a brother. Mav’s dad had been in prison for most of his life, so he got him and his mom by the only real way he knew how, drug dealing for the King Lords, the gang his father was in.

But Mav didn’t realize how quickly all that easy could fall apart.

When Mav finds out he has a son with another girl, his life starts to crumble.

Suddenly, he has a baby who depends on him for everything, and with a pledge to his cousin that he’d never sell again, he can barely get by.

And when things get even worse, Mav wonders how he’s gonna stay afloat and take care of his kid, when he’s still a kid himself.

I really really enjoyed reading this perspective. I loved getting in depth with how it really went down from Mav’s pov. It was really cool how since I’ve read The Hate U Give three times already, I was already familiar with that universe and I got to see some backstory of it all.

I think this book is really important in spreading awareness that sometimes the only choice you know how to make, it’s the socially acceptable choice, or even the choice you want to make.

It’s the choice you know how to make for survival.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wanted more The Hate U Give.
